What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

This is a form of talking therapy informed by the principles of psychoanalysis. It aims to help you understand how your current patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving and relating to others are influenced by past experiences and unconscious processes. It is a form of ‘depth therapy’, where you work with the therapist to better understand yourself and the origin of your current difficulties.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is typically a long-term style of therapy that is conducted over months to years, with weekly to twice-weekly session frequency. It may be useful for a wide variety of psychological issues and mental disorders, where unconscious factors are thought to be contributory, including chronic depression or anxiety, personality disorders, trauma, interpersonal problems, perfectionism and negative sense of self.

Referrals are screened to assess suitability, and we may contact you for further information.

If your referral is accepted, administrative staff will contact you to book a series of appointments for an in-depth assessment, which is required to determine whether psychodynamic psychotherapy with Dr Renzenbrink is a suitable treatment for you.

With a valid referral from your GP, you will be eligible for a Medicare rebate for each appointment. While there is typically a limit of ten Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year to see a psychologist for psychotherapy under a Mental Health Care Plan (Better Access Scheme), there is no limit on the number of rebated sessions per year with a psychiatrist. Private (gap) fees also apply, and you may qualify for additional Medicare rebates if you reach the Medicare Safety Net within a calendar year.
